courting controversy part the first

What's the reason for instinctively wanting to help and protect the old and frail?  In an evolutionary sense - aren't they functionally useless?

"They possess wisdom beyond our years" - I hear people say.  But we have computers and recording devices.  We can have a record of everything they had to say when their minds were at their sharpest. Before they began to deteriorate.  Before they began to forget.

I'm polite enough to conceed my seat on a bus to an elderly gentleman, but I need a better reason than upbringing (which I am trying to ween myself from) and societal pressure (which I never much cared for).  I need to know that it isn't just an archaic and empty gesture meant to make me feel good about myself.

Because that's just selfish isn't it?

I think deferring to the older person is a pack mentality of the tribe. Then it became codified into "Honor thy father and mother" ... and still later became social manners to "Respect your elders."

Those social ideas were probably dreamt up by someone on their verge of losing their alpha status and feared an untimely death.
